Although Albany is a relatively small community with a population of less than 100,000, it is situated on the crossroads between New York, Boston, Montreal and Syracuse. This makes it a most interesting place to live with a cultural mix from all these diverse communities. It is also able to take advantage of visiting artists, performers and sports events that travel between these destinations.
Albany is the second oldest chartered city in the US, and the fourth oldest continuously inhabited community. It gained its name in 1664 from the Duke of York and Albany, later King James II of England (James IV of Scotland). Today it forms part of the fourth largest urban area in New York State, along with Troy, New York and Schenectady.
Because Albany is predominantly a seat of Government and a university city, it is a really excellent place to study. It is the home of a number of universities, colleges and institutions, so you as a student will find that facilities for study, accommodation and social amenities will be all that you need for your student life in Albany.
A Little About Albany
Albany is the capital of the state of New York, located in the eastern part of the state on the west bank of the Hudson River.
The city's economy is centered around state government. It is the regional center for several banks and manufacturing firms. The health care, education, and research facilities of the Albany Medical Center complex are also important to the economy. In addition, the city retains significant manufacturing, trucking, and warehousing functions. Manufactures include metal fabrication, machine tools, cardboard and paper products, clothing and textiles, chemicals, plastics, cable and wire rope, and petroleum products.
Albany is also a gateway to resort areas in the nearby Catskill, Adirondack, and Berkshire mountains. The city is the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal, once a leading commercial transportation route but now primarily a recreational waterway.
