It's cultural richness is the result of being the major center for immigration from it's beginnings as a Dutch settlement. Although New York City itself is home to more than 8.1 million people, with the highest population density in the country, it nevertheless has the lowest crime rate of the ten largest cities in the country. It's growth is in large part a result of it's geographical location as a very sheltered port on the Atlantic seaboard, giving rise to it's importance as a center of trade.

If you decide to study in New York you will be a member of the largest student population in America - nearly 600,000 students study in the city. This means that you can share study, living and social amenities that are tailored to your needs as a student, and enjoy all the facilities that you need to make your student live rich, full and successful.

When you have completed your studies, you may well find that you follow the majority of people who have studied in New York and make your home there.

A Little About New York City

New York City (officially named the City of New York) is the most populous city in the United States, and is at the center of international finance, politics, communications, music, fashion, and culture. New York City proper comprises five boroughs: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island - each of which would be a major city in its own right. New York City is among the world's most important global cities, as it is home to a virtually unrivaled collection of world-class museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and stock exchanges.

The city serves as an enormous engine for the global economy, and is home to more Fortune 500 companies than anywhere else in the United States. The city is estimated to have a Gross Metropolitan Product of nearly $500 billion. If it were a nation, the city would have the 17th highest gross domestic product in the world, exceeding that of Belgium

New York City is the chief center of finance in the world economy, with Wall Street in Lower Manhattan's Financial District. Financial markets based in the city include the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, American Stock Exchange, New York Mercantile Exchange, and New York Board of Trade. Many corporations also have their headquarters in New York. The city is by far the most important center for American mass media, journalism and publishing. Manhattan's Madison Avenue is synonymous with the American advertising industry, while Seventh Avenue is nicknamed "Fashion Avenue" as it serves as an important center for the fashion industry. New York also has the most important scenes for art, music, and theater in the U.S., with an increasingly active artist's community. The city also has a large tourism industry.

New York City was the site of a terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 when nearly 3,000 people were killed by the terrorist strike on the World Trade Center, including New Yorkers employed in the buildings and hundreds of firemen, policemen, and rescue workers who came to their aid. The Freedom Tower, intended to be exactly 1,776 feet tall (a symbolic number as the year the Declaration of Independence was written), is to be built on the site and is slated to be constructed between 2006 and 2010.
