Colleges in White Plains

White Plains has a long and venerable history. Although the area of White Plains was settled and farmed from around 1688, it existed as an unincorporated village until 1788, when the Town of White Plains was created. Although the population of White Plains is only around 55,000, it is nevertheless home to several higher education establishments. It is the home of several large corporations, and education is one of the benefits that it offers to the business community.

There has been continuous redevelopment of the downtown areas in White Plains, starting in the 1950s and 60s when many of the Fortune 500 companies started to make White Plains the site of their corporate headquarters. This development reached it's height in the 1980s, but many companies have now moved because of downsizing. For this reason the area is going through another period of remodelling, and retailing is becoming a major attraction for White Plains.

A Little About White Plains

Westchester serves as the headquarters for several corporations and laboratories. Since the 1970's, many companies have moved their operations from Manhattan to White Plains. These office buildings are clustered in two areas; in the downtown business district and along Westchester Avenue in the eastern part of the city.

The battle of White Plains (1776), a principal engagement of the American Revolution, followed General George Washington's retreat from New York City. Washington briefly made his headquarters here at the Elijah Miller House, which still stands. Other buildings from the American Revolutionary period are also preserved
